November 30th, 2008 Subliminal Message in Fire Photo? I received a phone call and an e-mail from readers in the wake of the devastating fire that struck two Cambridge apartment buildings last week. Both commented on what they thought was a figure, or shape, in the heavy fire in the photo below. One suggested the shape reminded her of the devil. The other said it looked like Mother Teresa. Any thoughts?? See below

November 30th, 2008 Fly wheel I’ve been meaning to upload this photo for two weeks. I photographed Dwayne Scruton, 21, of Westford, and his friends doing jumps on trick bikes at a skate park at Hadley Park in Lowell. Here, Dwayne takes flight off a jump. There was no room for this in the paper so I wanted to get it up on the web as a way to say thanks to Dwayne and friends for letting me have a front row to their show…

November 26th, 2008 It started out as a good day……. I was out wasting some time before i had to start my drive into town to work by cruising along Nantasket beach in Hull. it was a perfect day for surfing with curlers rolling right into shore. Matt Lantier, of Quincy, a teacher in Norwell had a half day and spent the afternoon riding some waves. it started out well……. then things started to got a little dicey….. then it started to “not look good”….. ow, this might leave a mark…… …..and it did….. but, he was actually ok and walked away chuckling. I shot it with a 300mm f2.8 with a 2x converter.

November 17th, 2008 Shooting the Moon Over Winthrop on a “Blah” Night Ok, so it gets dark early these November days. Alright, VERY early. So there I was feeling a bit on the “late autumn bluesy” side. Yeah, you know, bad fiscal crisis, bone chilling wind, the Pat’s lost to the Jets last thursday etc. I decided to meet the night head on. So, with camera in hand I drove toward Winthrop to see if I could find the moon that has been so elusive the last several nights due to cloud cover. I knew it would not be a full moon when it rose at 7:48pm last night, however I decided to check it out thinking that Logan Airport arrivals would be flying in the same general area of view due to the very cold west/northwest wind direction. I positioned myself near Deer Island and set up a tripod with a 600mm lens and a 2x teleconverter on my Canon EOS 1D mark 11. The ASA was 800. The lens was pointed in the direction of Winthrop Shore Drive toward the arriving jets landing on runway 27. Here is what I photographed. Notice the heat distortion in back of the engines. My camera setting was 1/320th of a second shutter speed and F8 aperture (F stop). I turned the photo into a B&W.
