Judge: automakers cannot block RI emission rules

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A federal judge has ruled that automakers cannot sue to block Rhode Island from enforcing tighter standards on tailpipe emissions.

The car manufacturers have lost similar lawsuits in California and Vermont. In a ruling Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge Ernest Torres said allowing General Motors, Chrysler and two manufacturers associations to proceed with a lawsuit in Rhode Island would be a waste of time.
